Degree of Freedom, in collaboration with Vias y Construcciones SA, RD Concrete and Plan D participated in November 2020 in the competition for the construction and design of a cycle-pedestrian walkway over the mouth of the Cérvol river in Vinaroz, Spain, obtaining the second place.
The project included the construction of a walkway and a park next to the mouth of the river. It was proposed to use ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) as a great highlight to improve the durability of the proposal, which would be subject to the aggressive marine environment. The jury valued the integration of the design, the use of innovative materials, and the use of a coastal Mediterranean park.
The footbridge consists of a precast concrete monolithic span of 58m, with a U section formed by two variable height trusses and the deck at the level of the bottom chord. The trusses have an arched top chord and double Warren diagonals with a very slender section.
The material used in the design is UHPC (Ultra-High-Performance Concrete). It has excellent durability and achieves extremely slender structural elements with a concrete section.
The deck is flush with the pavement on both sides of the river without the need for ramps or steps and has light abutments that do not affect the existing services to the south side. The absence of structure below the deck gives the maximum clearance for floods. The design included a park to the north side of the river, as a transition between the river, the city and the beach.
