Project Description

Tonstad gang- og sykkelbru is the new pedestrian bridge over the Sira river in Tonstad.

The bridge is jointless and designed as a two-stage post-tensioned concrete girder with a total length of 108 metres distributed in four spans (24 m – 30 m – 30 m – 24 m). Its constant hunched deck cross-section provides both robustness and slenderness, offering a 3 meter clear width for traffic.

Degree of Freedom acts as main consultant for the design-build project, working for the contractor Konkret Entreprenør AS, with NIRAS and Geoteknia as sub-consultants, and Sirdal kommune as the builder. The scope includes the complete detailed design of the bridge for approval and construction, developed from a tender design delivered in fall 2024, as well as coordination across disciplines and a full BIM-based delivery of the bridge.

At the current stage, the bridge structure is largely completed. Remaining works include asphalt surfacing on the deck and groundworks at the abutments on both sides of the river, as well as the final connections to the surrounding pedestrian and cycle paths. The bridge is expected to open to the public once these works are completed and seasonal conditions allow.
