Project Description

Situated 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the town of Andenes, «The Whale» is envisioned as a cultural hub and whale-watching center that seamlessly integrates with its dramatic coastal surroundings. Designed by Dorte Mandrup Architects, the structure emerges organically from the rocky landscape, featuring a curved concrete shell roof covered with local stones, creating a walkable surface that offers panoramic views of the ocean and northern lights.

Degree of Freedom was responsible for the preliminary design of the overall project and the detailed design of the pedestrian bridge that connects the main building to the surrounding landscape. This bridge not only facilitates visitor movement but also complements the architectural language of the center, emphasizing minimal environmental impact and structural elegance.

The center will house exhibition spaces, offices, a café, and a store, aiming to provide an immersive experience that bridges the gap between humans and marine life through art and science. A network of paths, platforms, and viewpoints around the facility encourages exploration and underscores the connection between architecture and nature.
