Project Description

The project involved the emergency reconstruction of the bridge in Ribarroja del Turia after the flooding of October 2024.

The bridge featured a statically determinate deck of constant depth, composed of segments bearing on each other through half-lap joints. The main damage resulted from settlement and rotation of the foundations of two piers near the abutment on one of the sides. Constrained by the deck, the affected piers fractured along their shafts, and visible cracking appeared at the deck supports.

FEM Model: Degree of Freedom

To prevent potential collapse of the affected span, which would have compromised the entire bridge, a temporary propping system was installed beneath the deck at the half-lap joint. The damaged portion of the deck and piers was then demolished and reconstructed to match the original configuration. The rebuilt deck section was designed as a single piece instead of the three independent elements that previously formed this span. Once the new substructure was completed, the existing deck was carefully re-supported to restore continuity.

Foundation strengthening measures were implemented where required, including piles, micropiles and new pile caps, to comply with current standards.
