The winning proposal, «Weaving Hønefoss Together», aims to create more than just a physical connection – it seeks to become a new landmark and an integrated part of the city’s identity and landscape.
The project will link Hønefoss city centre, the scenic Petersøya island, and the Vesterntangen district via two elegant bridges – Sørsia Bridge and Petersøya Bridge. These, together with new pedestrian and cycle paths, will form a beautiful, continuous, meandering line inspired by the river’s natural flow, offering safe, efficient, and nature-oriented mobility for all.
The proposal strikes a balance between aesthetics, functionality, landscape, sustainability, and economy. The bridge designs are optimised to minimise material use, with environmentally friendly solutions such as low-carbon concrete and recycled steel. New meeting places, such as Petersplassen and Ole Thorkelsen’s Square, will be established to enhance Petersøya as an attractive recreational area.
The project will not only improve mobility for pedestrians and cyclists, but also strengthen Petersøya’s role as a green lung and a social hub in Hønefoss, contributing to a more vibrant and accessible city centre.
Degree of Freedom has contributed its specialised expertise in bridge engineering to ensure innovative and robust solutions. In the next phase of the project, Degree of Freedom will serve as design lead and be responsible for the bridge structures, working closely with the architects at SAAHA and the landscape architects at Bjørbekk & Lindheim.
