Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
The architectural shape of the pylon represents that of the spire of the Nidaros cathedral in Trondheim.
The bridge´s structural system has been chosen for the effective use of steel and reinforced concrete. Cables and steel deck elements provide tension and bending resistance whilst the reinforced concrete pylon and concrete deck slab are in compression. A single pylon on the west bank supports the 150m cable stayed composite deck across the river with a short 12.5m in-situ concrete back span to the roundabout structure.
The pylon in the form of an inverted V, 82m high, is founded on bedrock. The pylon section has a triangular form which varies over the height of the pylon. The pylon is tied at deck level by a concrete cross beam.
Two planes of cables in a fan-shaped arrangement radiate from the top of the pylon with 10no.Φ110mm cables to each side of the main span at 13.64m centres. 10no.Φ140mm back stay cables are anchored at the roundabout with an inspection chamber below. Vertical rock anchors are accessed for inspection via a tunnel below the new road.
