The design team of NUNO Arkitektur, Multiconsult and DOF Engineers were the competition winners for a new footbridge over the canal in Flekkefjord.

The steel bridge, 54m long, crosses the canal in four, approximately equal, spans. One central span is a bascule bridge creating a 12m wide clear sailing canal in the open position. The design is done during 2012/13 and the bridge will open to the public in 2014.

The fixed spans have a central box girder with cantilevering ribs below an orthotropic deck. The movable span has an orthotropic deck supported by two slender Y-shaped box girders, on on each side. The Y-shaped frames, consisting of the pylon, deck girder and counterweight, are balanced at the rotation axis. The inclined pylons provide support to the deck girders via five cable stays per Y-frame.

The bridge deck is supported on a single slender concrete-filled steel column at each support except at the rotation axis, where there are two columns.

The mechanical system for opening the bridge is concealed within the base of one of the pylons.
