The new bridge is 450m long, has a bascule span, and connects the centre of Gothenburg with a new, large residential area at west of Gothenburg. It is aimed to substitute the existing bridge which is deeply deteriorated and in bad conditions. The width of 45m includes 2No pedestrian and cycle lanes, 4No traffic lanes and a central tramway. The part of the bridge over water is only 200m while the rest are approach spans above public spaces. The architect’s vision is that of a calm and sober design of the deck, where focus is put on the finishes at pedestrian lanes. The soffit shall reflect the water surface and create amicable shapes by using elliptical surfaces at deck and columns. The central span is a 42m long bascule movable deck, including the 30m main span and 12m counterweight at the other side of the spherical bearings.

The deck is a continuous composite hollow box section over concrete columns. The movable span is a steel box girder with identical soffit, but lighter in weight. The counterweight is made up by a combination of concrete and steel.
