Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
Degree of Freedom has designed, in collaboration with A-Ingenia, three railway bridges in different locations of Alicante province, Villajoyosa, Teulada and Gata de Gorgos. The bridges are part of the renovation of TRAM lines 1 and 9 carried out by the Valencia Rail Authorities (FGV). In addition, Degree of Freedom in collaboration with A-Ingenia have carried out the construction management on behalf of FGV.
All the bridges are simply supported with spans between 19.5 m and 24 m. The bridges in Villajoyosa and Teulada are truss bridges, with around 2.70 m height trusses connected by transverse beams. The distance between girders depends on the train horizontal clearance being 4.40 m in Villajoyosa because the rail line is curved and 3.95 m in Teulada.
The bridge in Gata de Gorgos is a two girders bridge with 1.10 m height girders and connected by transverse beams.
In all bridges the transverse beams are connected to a collaborating concrete slab that gives support to the ballast bed.
All bridges have pile foundations built behind the existing bridge foundations to reduce the affection to the original structure and reduce the construction time.
