Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
Degree of Freedom, with SAAHA, Lala og Gether have won the competition for the development of Nydalsveien 32B – Nydalen in Oslo. The project is a FutureBuilt competition with ambitious objectives for both the urban environment, architecture, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy.
The purpose of the competition is to develop a proposal for how the historic old industrial building in Nydalsveien 32B can be preserved, while the construction of new homes and to create the opportunity for active and vibrant city life. Our winning entry “I love Nydalen” creates a central nave that is transformed into a greenhouse, a community room where residents can meet with each other and the public.
The idea for the construction is to maintain the existing brick walls of the old industrial building, erecting the new buildings inside the lateral areas of the old construction in a controlled manner. The aim is to use an efficient, adaptable and light structural system for the new constructions and to maximize the use of sustainable materials: the main structural systems will be solved with mass timber elements- CLT (cross laminated timber) panels to form the vertical walls and the floor panels of the different constructions.
