- Location: Norrtälje, Sweden
- Client: Norrtälje municipality / WSP Sverige
- Phase: Competition
- Year: 2016 - ongoing

Degree of Freedom, WSP Sverige, NUNO arkitektur, and Sting (mechanical engineers), have won the architecture and engineering competition for a new movable pedestrian and cycle bridge across the harbour in Norrtälje, a town north of Stockholm. The bridge will be an important link between the habitants north of the harbour and the green recreational areas to the south.
The client wanted a landmark structure, and therefore it is satisfying that they have chosen our proposal which is without structure above the deck, says Peter Aasen, architect and partner in NUNO arkitektur. The bridge will become a landmark in a metaphorical sense, with a simple, modern and elegant expression.
The swing bridge is a steel box girder bridge with four spans and with a total length of 74m. The two centre spans rotate to let ship traffic pass.
The jury’s statement concludes: “The bridge adapts nicely to the surroundings and creates an interaction with existing bridges in the town. It creates a closed, framed inner part of the harbour… It’s ingenious in its simplicity.”
