Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia, Gdansk and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
Degree of Freedom, in collaboration with Snøhetta and the London-based consulting engineers Price & Myers, took part in the international design competition for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Thames between Nine Elms and Pimlico.
The design was required to meet an exacting brief to create a landmark structure whilst maintaining a 150m wide navigation channel and integrating pedestrian and cycle traffic.
The proposed cable-stayed bridge adopted an S-shape in plan to accommodate ramp access for cyclists at the same time as giving a design that minimised the impact at the landing points.
Of the 82 pre-qualified teams and as many proposals, and despite not being one of the four finalists, our team was one of the few that was mentioned in the evaluation.
