Winning design competition entry for of a new museum, a performing arts school, a hotel and a building to be used as an incubator for artistic startup.The international competition, promoted by Kristiansand City Council, Sørlandets Kunstmuseum, the Tangen Collection and Kanalbyen Eiendom AS, proposes the transformation of the city’s port area into an artistic hub.
The building is a modernist icon and will be incorporated in the new museum complex. The proposal by MX_SI and Mestres Wåge uses the expressiveness of the silo as a container of one of the key pieces of the proposal, namely the Kunstsilo museum.
The jury based its decision on the following criteria: the quality of the exhibition spaces; the new use of the grain silo, a landmark building; the urban planning strategy; and the capacity to execute the project with environmentally friendly solutions. The project of the MX_SI and Mestres Wåge team was chosen as the competition winner due to its simple and powerful strategy for the redesign of the silo in accordance with its new function.
