Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
Vindbron, an existing retractable bridge across the river Fyris in Uppsala, is in bad conditions and has been closed for traffic. A new movable pedestrian bridge is planned at the same location. The existing bridge has been used for heavy agriculture traffic, and the capacity of the existing concrete structure, after inspection, has been assumed sufficient and can be reused. Degree of Freedom has, in collaboration with WSP, elaborated two alternatives for the new bridge:
Retractable bridge, as the existing bridge. The system is both logic with such limited spans and also due to the fact that the existing supports in concrete were to be reused.
Bascule bridge, based on principle a classic Dutch bascule bridge with the counterweight attached to the structure above the deck.
Both bridges are proposed with a timber decking which fits well in the rural and natural environment. Railing for both bridges is a light stainless steel net and night illumination is included in the upper handrail, illuminating down on the deck.
