Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
DEGREE OF FREEDOM prepared a solution for competition of ideas for the project “Construction project of a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Miño river, between Goián (Spain) and Vila Nove de Cerveira (Portugal)”. Today, the river is a meeting point, an element of great landscape and environmental value. In this narrow at the lower part of Miño river, we can find Natural Parks at both sides. This footbridge will be the physical union of two natural public spaces, and two urban areas from two neighbour countries. Appreciating the landscape in which the bridge is found, it has been given priority to the combination of low visual impact and high symbolic value, additionally to low environmental impact during construction.
The presented solution consists of a 240.85 m long continuous bridge divided on 4 spans (24.00 m + 26.45 m + 159.00 m + 31.40 m). The central span is suspended, with two symmetrical inclined towers anchored at the abutment to stabilize them. The other spans are supported at the abutments, one column and the towers. The girder beam has a composited monocellular section. The towers are 36 m height A-shaped. The suspension system is formed by catenary cables and suspension bars with a triangular distribution.
