Degree of Freedom is an international civil and structural engineering practice with offices in Oslo, Valencia and Athens. We design bridges, buildings and special structures, in timber, steel, and concrete. We are architecture oriented and innovative.
Winner of the NORWEGIAN STEEL CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2017. The bridge is also shortlisted to this year WAN best bridge award.
Degree of freedom has designed a new pedestrian bridge crossing over Ytre Ringvei for the City of Oslo. The bridge is part of the pedestrian and cycle path between residential areas in and around Smalvollveien and the forest east of Oslo (Østmarka).
The pedestrian bridge crossing Ytre Ringvei is an 80 meter long continuous steel box girder structure with four spans, the longest is 22 meters long. The bridge has an asymmetric cross section shaped to optimize the structural performance and necessities. In plan view the bridge resembles a boomerang and it is shaped to follow the serpentine line of the adjacent paths, avoiding trees and other natural obstacles on its way through the forest. Leaning at the ends on concrete abutments cladded with local natural stones, the bridge is supported by three slender steel columns. With a cross section depth of 0.85 meters and a maximum span of 22 meters, the depth to span ratio is only 1/26.
The structure of the bridge is made of weathering steel. Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance when exposed to the open air.
